My Meijer Shopping Adventure and Giveaway!

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

bracelet 1

So, sometime last week, I got an email from Meijer, asking me if I would go on a shopping excursion to look at some of their jewelry and blog about what I thought, and they were kind enough to offer me the means for doing so in the form of a gift card.  I tell you this part because I want to be 100% up front with you about the fact that Meijer provided the means for shopping in this case, and also to tell you that, I will never ever recommend something to you if I don’t think it’s worth recommending.  I thought this was a good opportunity since, to be honest, I sort of forget that Meijer even carried jewelry.  Moving on..

Things you should know: A LOT of Meijer’s jewelry is marked down as much as 70% right now.  Also, if you purchase $49.99 or more in jewelry online, you can use the code NEWJEWELRY10 to get an extra 10% off.  Today only, you can use the code SANTASHIPS to get free shipping as well!

If you’re buying in store, make sure to take Santa Bucks with you (valid only through midnight tonight) to save up to 20%!

What I Found:

  • Some great staples- meaning simple sterling silver hoops and chains.  I think a simple pair of silver hoops can be really beautiful.  This pair (below) is on sale for $17.99, down from $36.99 (and the fact that they’re actually sterling silver is important, because I’m allergic to a lot of filler metals in earrings!)

earrings3

  • Lots of “classic” jewelry- I’ll be upfront and tell you I’ve never been much of a jewelry girl, so if you’re a guru, that classic label might not fit.  What I consider classic is gemstone jewelry, Black Hills Gold arrangements, and sterling silver pieces that are simple, with the gemstone being the main focus.  When I went into the store, I found a lot of this type of jewelry, along with some pearl items.  I was thinking that this would be very popular with my older sister (who is only 2 years older, but much more “classic” than I am).  If you’re a classic jewelry type of person, shopping in store is the way to go.  You should find some really nice sterling silver necklaces and sets, and they’re at a great price right now!
  • That Said… I’m not a classic jewelry girl.  Most of the little jewelry I own is what would probably fall under fashion jewelry.  So I left the store a little disappointed, wondering  if I should just select something to give to my sister; but then I went online and found several things that were much more up my alleyIf you’re more of a contemporary jewelry type of person, you’re going to find what you’re looking for online.

First item I found that I loved:

earringsMeijer carries a brand called Massini that seems to be a nice mix of classic and contemporary.  This pair of earring is currently priced at $29.99, down from $59.99.

earrings2

I also like this pair, also by Massini, which are currently at priced at $19.99, down from $79.99.

Then… I found this:

bracelet2I would be hard to overstate how much I love this bracelet.  I can see it going with a good holiday party dress, or as a wedding accessory, and just looking very sleek.  If I had applied the NEWJEWELRY10 discount code, this would have fit right into the jewelry shopping gift that Meijer provided me with, and it was really, really hard not to buy it.  But I didn’t.  BECAUSE- I thought, hey, if you’re reading the blog, you should get something out of this deal too! (Without you, Meijer would definitely not be asking me to go shopping).  So I bought another bracelet that I really loved; actually, I bought two- one to give away to a reader!

bracelet 1

I think this sterling silver cuff – (above) which is the giveaway item- is also really pretty; Right now it’s priced at $39.99, down from $99.99

Want to win it, either for yourself or your significant other (great Christmas present!)??

Here’s the contest:

You can enter 3 different ways (but you don’t have to do all three- up to you!).  Make sure each of these is a different comment, so you can have up to three entries!

(1) Subscribe to my RSS feed (top right corner of the page) and confirm you email address.  No spam- just one email around dinner time each day, with a list of all deals posted that day.  After you do this, leave a comment saying that you’re a new subscriber.  If you’re already a subscriber, leave a comment saying that!

(2) “Like” my page on Facebook, then leave a comment saying that you did.  If you’re already a FB fan, leave a comment saying so.

(3) Tell me either (a) What your favorite piece of jewelry ever received was or (b) Who you would give this bracelet to if you won, and why!

Please, please leave your comments in the comments section- NOT on the Facebook page (where they won’t be counted).  If the comment doesn’t appear immediately, don’t worry- I just have to approve it.

This contest will end at midnight on Saturday, December 11th!

Thanks for being Lolalou in the Zoo readers- it’s so nice to be able to give something back to you!

Lolalou Tries it Out: Thred Up

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

thredup

I’m always looking for new ways to get clothing for my son that’s cheap, but doesn’t look cheap.  As I’ve posted in the past, I’m a huge proponent of Mom2Mom sales, but those tend to drop off a bit in the winter.  A few weeks back, Hip2Save posted about a site called ThredUp.  The idea is this: If you’re the seller, you (virtually) pack up a box of your child’s clothing and post it, along with descriptions of the clothing inside.  Then, people searching for clothing look through the box descriptions, pick it, you pack it up (literally), and it’s shipped off!  If you’re the buyer, you pick a box, pay the fee and the shipping ($15.70 total) and wait for it to arrive.

A few points of note:

*Boxes are categorized as mostly tops, mostly bottoms, or a mixture of the two.

*Sizes range from preemie to a kids’ size 20.

*Once you find someone who seems to have the same taste in clothing as you do, you can make them a favorite and keep ordering their boxes.

*Every box costs $5, plus shipping.  When you order the box, you pay the shipping.  If someone else orders one of your boxes, they pay the shipping.

*You must send as many as you receive, for the sake of it being a swap, so get ready to pack up some boxes!

*You do get descriptions of the items in the boxes, but you don’t get pictures.  That said- there’s a ThredUp Golden Rule, which is “Only send what you would want to receive”.  If you send an unacceptable item, you’ll get a warning, and eventually you’ll get the boot.  I like this because it sort of insures that I’m not going to send off a box of nice items and receive a box of worn out clothing back!

*The $5 does not go to the seller- it’s the site fee for facilitating all of this swapping, sort of like the $2 you pay to get into Mom 2 Mom sales.

So, I’m going to try it out!  Today I ordered my first box, and it should be here in the next week some time.  Some questions/concerns I have:

*Am I going to get quality clothing that’s my style? (ie, are the descriptions really enough?)

*Flat rate shipping and cost of the box combined means that each order is $15.70.  Are the items in the box going to be worth that, or is it cheaper to just pay a little bit more at local resale shops?

Answers to these question (plus? Pictures!) coming your way!  In the meantime, have a look around ThredUp and tell me what you think!*

*Note: It is, in fact, “ThredUp”- as opposed to “ThreadUp”, like you would think.  Don’t know why, just is…

Zulily: Dr. Seuss Onesies, Hoodies and Pajamas for $4.99-$9.99
